Family Groups

A place where energizing, fulfilling relationships happen

What is a family group?

FAMILY GROUP (pronounced /ˈfam(ə)lē ɡro͞op/) -

A group of 3-15 people growing together in Christ-likeness through loving, accountable relationships.

(Note: Family groups are not the same as classes. Family groups always include, but are not limited to: growth, loving relationships, AND accountability.)

Why join a family group?

If you've ever attended church, you've likely heard of small groups, life groups, clusters, care groups, or other versions of those things...but family groups? Yeah, it's our version of that (stick with us if you're confused).

Think of the best friend you ever had. What are the chances you became best friends (and stayed best friends) simply by sitting next to each other for an hour a week for a few years? Slim to none, probably. In the same way, lasting relationships between real people are usually not built by filling a seat every Sunday for a few years. It takes more effort than that.

But why bother? Why not just be comfortable going to church once a week and keeping fellow church-goers at arms length? It largely depends on whether or not you want to have a close and deepening relationship with God himself. Listen to what Luke writes in the Bible in Acts 2:

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul...And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:42-43, 45-47)

Notice how the people devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching (Scripture), praying together, and the breaking of bread (eating together) and "awe came upon every soul" and they had "glad and generous hearts" as they praised God.

These people loved God, and their hearts were glad. They loved each other as well. In fact they met together just to be with one another and to praise God together. And they loved to give to one another and to others "as any had need".

This is not normal behavior.

It was the love of God that transformed their hearts. They began to care more about each other than about themselves. And they were happy as they praised God together and took care of one another.

If you'd like to be filled with awe at the God of the universe, if you'd like to have a heart that is full of gladness, if you'd like to become more generous and thankful, and have your faith strengthened as God provides for your needs through the love and generosity of others towards you, take a step forward and join a family group. It's worth the effort.
